Croatian in a voice-over brief

Croatian is the standard language used in Croatia and is mutually intelligible with Bosnian, Serbian and Montenegrin. The standards differ in vocabulary and in some spellings, and Croatian tends to keep native words where others borrow. Tourism makes Croatia a heavy user of multilingual audio on the coast. A brief states the audience, the register and whether English, German or Italian versions will follow, and a native reviewer checks the script.

Accent and direction notes

What our director listens for in a Croatian session.

  1. Close to neighbours

Croatian is close to Bosnian and Serbian but has its own vocabulary.

  2. Latin script

Croatian is written in Latin script.

  3. Regional speech

    Coastal and inland speech differ.

What casting decides in Croatian

  • Croatian or regional

Local ads want a Croatian voice.

  • Tourism or corporate

    Different tone.

How we work

  1. Casting

We shortlist voices for your language, audience and tone, and explain the difference between them. You choose, and approve a written quote.

  2. Direction

A director runs the session against your brief: meaning, pace and every agreed pronunciation. You can listen in remotely.

  3. Delivery

Every file is checked against the script word by word and technically, then delivered in your format and naming.

What decides the price

No price list: every quote is written for your project and states usage and the delivery date.
