Urdu in a voice-over brief

Urdu is written in Nastaliq, a flowing form of the Arabic-based script, and its vocabulary draws on Persian and Arabic. Speech is close to Hindi, and many listeners understand both. Poetry, particularly the ghazal, shapes the language’s cultural prestige. A brief states the audience, the register and whether the text is poetic or plain.

Accent and direction notes

What our director listens for in a Urdu session.

  1. Right to left

Scripts and on-screen text run right to left, in Nastaliq or Naskh.

  2. Close to Hindi in speech

Speech is close to Hindi, with more Persian and Arabic vocabulary.

  3. Poetic register

Urdu poetry has set rhythms and a formal diction.

What casting decides in Urdu

Vocabulary tells listeners which they are hearing.

  • Register

How we work

  1. Casting

We shortlist voices for your language, audience and tone, and explain the difference between them. You choose, and approve a written quote.

  2. Direction

A director runs the session against your brief: meaning, pace and every agreed pronunciation. You can listen in remotely.

  3. Delivery

Every file is checked against the script word by word and technically, then delivered in your format and naming.

What decides the price

No price list: every quote is written for your project and states usage and the delivery date.
