Amharic in a voice-over brief

Amharic is a Semitic language and the working language of the Ethiopian federal government. It is written in the Ge’ez syllabary, where each symbol represents a consonant with a vowel. It is related to Tigrinya, but the languages differ in sound and vocabulary. Government, health and banking communication use it widely. A brief names the audience, the register and whether other Ethiopian languages will follow, and a native reviewer checks the script.

Accent and direction notes

What our director listens for in a Amharic session.

  1. Ge’ez script

Amharic uses a syllabic script of its own.

  2. Semitic grammar

Related to Arabic and Hebrew, with its own sounds.

  3. Other languages in Ethiopia

Oromo and Tigrinya have their own pages.

How we work

  1. Casting

We shortlist voices for your language, audience and tone, and explain the difference between them. You choose, and approve a written quote.

  2. Direction

A director runs the session against your brief: meaning, pace and every agreed pronunciation. You can listen in remotely.

  3. Delivery

Every file is checked against the script word by word and technically, then delivered in your format and naming.

What decides the price

No price list: every quote is written for your project and states usage and the delivery date.

Length
Word count or running time of the finished audio.
Use and territory
Internal, online or broadcast; where it runs and for how long.
Voice
Some languages and voice profiles are scarcer than others.
Picture and files
Recording to timecode, splitting and naming add work.
