Bengali in a voice-over brief

Bengali is written in a script of its own and is the language of Bangladesh and West Bengal, with a literary tradition that includes Tagore and Nazrul. Standard colloquial Bengali used in broadcast differs from the formal literary form. Bangladeshi and Indian Bengali differ in vocabulary and rhythm. A brief states the country, the register and the treatment of English terms.

Accent and direction notes

What our director listens for in a Bengali session.

  1. Two countries, two flavours

Bangladeshi and West Bengali speech differ in vocabulary and sound. The brief names the audience.

  2. Formal and colloquial

Written Bengali is more formal than speech. Scripts say which the actor reads.

  3. Conjunct letters

Many characters combine; proofing by a native reader prevents misreads.

What casting decides in Bengali

  • Bangladesh or India

    References and vocabulary change.

  • Register

    Public notices are formal.

How we work

  1. Casting

We shortlist voices for your language, audience and tone, and explain the difference between them. You choose, and approve a written quote.

  2. Direction

A director runs the session against your brief: meaning, pace and every agreed pronunciation. You can listen in remotely.

  3. Delivery

Every file is checked against the script word by word and technically, then delivered in your format and naming.

What decides the price

No price list: every quote is written for your project and states usage and the delivery date.
