Estonian in a voice-over brief

Estonian is a Finnic language, related to Finnish but not mutually intelligible with it. It has three degrees of vowel and consonant length, a feature that can change the meaning of a word. Estonia’s public services and banks are largely digital, which makes recorded and spoken interfaces common. A brief states the audience, whether Russian will be recorded beside Estonian and how English brand names are pronounced.

Accent and direction notes

What our director listens for in a Estonian session.

  1. Three lengths

Estonian has short, long and overlong sounds that change meaning.

  2. Related to Finnish

Finnish speakers understand some, but the languages differ.

  3. Long words

    Compounds need careful reading.

What casting decides in Estonian

  • Estonian or Russian

Many audiences are bilingual; see the Russian page.

  • Register

Public notices are plain and short.

How we work

  1. Casting

We shortlist voices for your language, audience and tone, and explain the difference between them. You choose, and approve a written quote.

  2. Direction

A director runs the session against your brief: meaning, pace and every agreed pronunciation. You can listen in remotely.

  3. Delivery

Every file is checked against the script word by word and technically, then delivered in your format and naming.

What decides the price

No price list: every quote is written for your project and states usage and the delivery date.

Length
Word count or running time of the finished audio.
Use and territory
Internal, online or broadcast; where it runs and for how long.
Voice
