New York voice over talent

Two quite different things get asked for under this heading. One is the accent: recognisably New York, direct and impatient with padding, used when a brand wants to sound local, streetwise or unpretentious. The other is simply talent based in New York, delivering neutral General American, because the city holds one of the deepest concentrations of professional voice talent anywhere.

Both are worth being explicit about in a brief, because they lead to completely different casting.

The accent is not one thing

The classic broad New York accent, the one most people picture, is far less common than it was and reads as period rather than contemporary to local ears. Present-day New York speech is much closer to neutral American with light regional colour. Casting the broad version for a modern brand often lands as parody.
